VOLUNTEER WITH THE HEMINGWAY CHAPTER

Our chapter offers individuals the opportunity to actively contribute to the conservation and restoration of regional freshwater ecosystems, with a specific focus on trout and salmon habitats. Volunteers engage in various activities, such as stream restoration, habitat improvement projects, and community education initiatives. These volunteer programs, individuals play a crucial role in protecting our rivers and streams, sustaining these vital ecosystems for both wildlife and communities. We form a passionate community dedicated to the stewardship of freshwater resources and the promotion of responsible angling practices.

FISH RESCUE PROGRAMS

Every year thousands of fish and other species of fish which live in the Big Wood River watershed migrate into irrigation diversions and canals never to return to the river. At the end of each irrigation season when the water flows are shut off, the fish become trapped and die. In 2023 we rescued 13,000 fish! The Rescues often occur with little advance notice, resulting in times and locations changing at the last minute. If you would like to volunteer for this hands-on and fun program to help our fish, please join our mailing list or email: info.hemingwaytu@gmail.com.

BOX CAR BEND CLEAN-UP & MAINTENANCE

The Hemingway Chapter of Trout Unlimited partners with The Wood River Land Trust on this annual one-day project. Each year since 2006 we maintain the accesses and trails at Box Car Bend on the Big Wood River. Participants of all ages help pull invasive weeds, clean trails from overgrowth and crab grass, put down wood chips on the trails and maintain the erosion control barriers. A few hours of hard work are followed up by a BBQ lunch and snacks.

Volunteers should bring appropriate gardening clothing including hats, sun glasses, and work gloves. Tools to bring: garden rakes, scoop shovels, hoes, Wheel Barrows.

FISH ACCESS MAINTENANCE

Public access to our streams and rivers is critical to all the fisherman in the Valley. Our Hemingway Chapter works diligently to advocate for, create and maintain our public fishing accesses throughout the Big Wood watershed. The late Dave Spaulding started us on this activity in 2011 and today we continue both in his memory and for the benefit of all our members.

We maintain bi-lingual signage describing the fishing regulations and access locations on almost all of the Big Wood river accesses. Most of this work takes place prior to opening day on Memorial Day weekend and it requires volunteers to work with the chapter in order to identify signage that needs replaced or repaired.

ERC CLEAN SWEEP

Each spring since 2017 the Hemingway Chapter supports and participates with a team in the ERC "clean sweep" of the Wood River Valley. Volunteers from multiple conservation organizations join together to clean up the river and banks along the Big Wood River, up and downstream near the River Run Public Access. Among our found and removed "trophies" over the years: a chaise lounge, a burnt guitar, a road cone, and lots of general debris. Our team has won the "best spirit" award and "most unusual find" awards. This is a fun event and supports our goal of protecting our rivers.
